Angelina Jolie’s journey to motherhood all started with son Maddox. The actress and activist adopted her eldest son from a Cambodian orphanage in 2002, when he was 7 months old. She would raise him as a single mother, also adopting daughter Zahara from Ethiopia in 2003. Brad Pitt would go on to adopt Maddox and Zahara in 2006. Brangelina’s daughter Shiloh was born in 2006 and they adopted Pax in 2007 when he was 4. Twins Knox and Vivienne were born in 2008.
As Maddox got older, his relationship with Brad became strained. The tension came to a head in the fall of 2016 after Brad and Maddox reportedly got into a physical altercation on the family’s private jet. Angelina filed for divorce not long after, beginning a contentious years-long battle over their kids and their estate.
In August 2019, Maddox enrolled at Yonsei University in South Korea. Angelina later admitted she “ugly cried” after dropping him off for college, marking a bittersweet moment in their journey together.
Angelina’s devotion to her children is evident in everything she does. One memorable moment captured in July 2003 shows her carrying little Maddox through New York City on a rainy day, with Maddox bundled up in a raincoat and Angelina rocking an early 2000s look with gradient shades.
