Celebrities Leaving the Country Amid Trump’s Presidency: Photos

These celebrities either claimed they’d move or reportedly wanted to leave America if Donald Trump became president.

Before Donald Trump won the 2016 U.S. presidential election, multiple celebrities threatened to move out of the country. While most of them didn’t follow through with their word, the 2024 election has brought their past statements into question. So, will any of them actually leave America now that Donald has been elected a second time?

Miley Cyrus is one of the most famous names who initially claimed she’d leave the states in 2016. However, following Donald’s election, she encouraged fans to give him a chance in an emotional social media video at the time.

Ellen and her wife, Portia de Rossi, moved to a rural section of the U.K. and “plan to never return to the United States” because of Trump’s re-election, The Wrap reported on November 20, 2024. 

Neither Ellen nor Portia has publicly commented on the report.

During a November 2024 interview with Marie Claire, she revealed she was not living in the U.S. full-time anymore. While she decided to do this before the election, the actress noted that the results further encouraged her decision. 

“I’m privileged,” Eva acknowledged. “I get to escape and go somewhere. Most Americans aren’t so lucky. They’re going to be stuck in this dystopian country, and my anxiety and sadness is for them. … I had my whole adult life here. But even before [the pandemic], it was changing. The vibe was different. And then Covid happened, and it pushed it over the edge.”

The Green Day musician has been a critic of Donald for years, even changing a lyric in “American Idiot” to call out the “MAGA agenda.” But after the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Billie threatened in 2022 that he’d renounce his American citizenship. 

“F**k America. I’m f**king renouncing my citizenship,” he said, per Newsweek. “There’s too much f**king stupid in the world to go back to that miserable f**king excuse for a country.”

While speaking with Cosmopolitan in 2020, the “All of Me” hitmaker said, “We were born and raised here, all of our families are here. It would be hard to leave. But I don’t know what one’s supposed to do when you have a leader who is trying to destroy democracy.”

John added, “If America chooses to be that place, then people will have to start thinking about going somewhere else. It is truly disturbing and concerning.”

Shortly after the 2024 election results came in, Jimmy joked in an opening skit of his late-night show that he was “leaving the country” because he “can’t stay for another four years of this.” 

“Who knows what he’s gonna do?” Jimmy asked Guillermo Rodriguez while pointing out Donald’s “list of enemies.”
